chapter nine

Birdie

HENDRIX PARKED HIS car near a wooded area in this small town I've heard of but never visited, probably an hour outside of Pittsburgh. His friend Nico told us to park a mile away from the motel he booked for us and walk there, keeping the car out of sight so it's harder for them to find us if they're looking.

I don't know if we can trust his friend, but I don't know what else to do at this point. I have to have some faith or else hope is lost entirely. It's what I have to focus on while I'm so overwhelmed by the torrent of emotions storming through me.

I'm furious that I can't testify.

I'm sorrowful that I can't give Nikki justice.

I'm numb about leaving my life behind.

I'm energized and wild-eyed at Hendrix's side.

Hendrix reaches out as we walk, snatching my hand in his grip. His fingers shift and lace through mine before he squeezes, holding onto me as though he's afraid I'll pull away.

But I can't pull away… I'm already locked in, tangled into his life, which is twisted through mine, fastened to a future I didn't know would exist before tonight.

My heart kicks up a steady rhythm as I squeeze back, longing for whatever this strange connection is between us—between me and my would-be killer. We're both about to leave our lives behind, and I can't think of a more frightening way to form a forever bond with someone… aside from the bond between murdered and murderer.

We pass through a dark parking lot on our way to the motel, trying to stay away from the main road. There's hardly any traffic this late, and it's dark aside from the single traffic light along the road parallel to us, which we've already passed. The yellow light flashes with an eerie, rhythmic glow as we walk together, the decrepit two-story motel just half a parking lot ahead of us.

"It's funny…" I whisper. "Normally I'd avoid walking through empty parking lots at night with strange men that I hardly know."

He lets out a short chuckle. "Do you often have the opportunity to walk through empty parking lots at night with strange men?"

"This is a first for me."

"First for me, too," he says.

"A night of firsts I'm certain I won't forget."

He glances over at me as he pulls me along to keep up with his long strides. "Night's not over yet."

"Right," I swallow, my throat suddenly dry.

Something about his tone makes me wonder what he really means. If we follow Nico's instructions, we're going to sit quietly in a motel room until he comes to us after sunrise…

So what other firsts could there possibly be?

His thumb brushes the backs of my knuckles, sending a spark of electricity across my skin.

My eyes are fixed on him as we close the distance from this empty lot to the nearly empty one in front of the motel. I see his eyes flicker to dart a furtive glance in my direction, his chest rising heavily as he takes in a deep breath before falling again.
